'The Big Bang Theory' just did what no TV show has ever done before

And people say TV will rot your brain: Yesterday, CBS’ The Big Bang Theory made waves—and history—when showrunner Chuck Lorre (Mom, Two and a Half Men, Mike & Molly) revealed that he plans on taking the award-winning program’s scientific slant from fiction to reality. Starting this week, Big Bang Theory and The Chuck Lorre Family Foundation have established The Big Bang Theory Scholarship Endowment—valued at $4 million dollars.

Cops Arrest Subway Riders For "Manspreading": Gothamist

Manspreading arrests are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to numbers-driven policing in the subway system, which often takes place in the middle of the night, according to Gangi. Underground is where Broken Windows champion and police commissioner Bill Bratton got his start at the NYPD as transit chief, and fare evasion consistently ranks among the most common types of misdemeanor arrests. But the maddening tickets and criminal charges recounted in the PROP report come in many shapes and sizes, for behavior like putting a foot on a subway seat or walking between cars (always illegal, whether or not you're bothering anybody). Gangi said that he has no concrete proof that quotas exist, but that it's the only explanation for the volume of questionable cases he sees coming through court.

Inspectors are hitting areas with the most complaints and repeat offenders to check for violations. If the grass and weeds stand taller than a foot, it is a violation of the City code and the property owner will receive a written warning with a five-day deadline to clean up the lawn.

If owners don’t follow through, the City will send out a vendor that will mow the yard for them and then slap the owner with a $353 fine.

“We hate to do it, but it’s something that needs to be done,” said DCE Public Information Officer Dimitri Kyser.

The sweeps seem to be working.

Fentanyl is used to manage severe chronic and post-surgical pain. As a pharmaceutical, prescribed in lozenges or transdermal patches, it is 10 to 50 times more potent than morphine.
But, increasingly, a powdered form of the drug that is 200 to 2,000 times more potent is being mixed with heroin or passed off as heroin to unwitting users.
“If the heroin-acclimated person buys what they think is heroin and it’s a mixture of fentanyl or even pure fentanyl, they’re done,” says New Hampshire’s Chief Medical Examiner Thomas Andrew, whose office released a final tally of 2014’s drug-related deaths this week. “Because they are going to inject the amount they are used to injecting.
“It’s public enemy number one now.”

Ulbricht’s sentencing likely puts the final seal on the saga of Silk Road, the anarchic underground market the 31-year-old Texan created in early 2011. At its peak, the Dark Web site grew to a sprawling smorgasbord of every narcotic imaginable—before Ulbricht was arrested in a public library in San Francisco in October of 2013. Eighteen months later, he was convicted in a Manhattan court on seven felony charges, including conspiracies to traffic in narcotics and launder money, as well as a “kingpin” charge usually reserved for the leaders of organized crime groups.

Burtop’s mom wants to take it even further, threatening to sue the school for gender discrimination—the boys’ section instructs them not to show their underwear, but it doesn’t order them to minimize the appearance of their body fat.
Fortunately, sausageghazi looks like it might be the rarest of American problems, the kind that can be resolved without a lawsuit.
“School officials said the issue is being addressed and the letter does not reflect the standards of the Upper Adams School District,” ABC News reports. It’s apparently been failing to meet those standards for quite some time: officials added it was “drafted years ago, and the author of the original document has since retired.”

The Costs of a $15 Minimum Wage - Reason.com

The Costs of a $15 Minimum Wage - Reason.com

"The problem is that a higher legal minimum wage is at odds with the prevailing supply of and demand for labor. If you set the minimum too high, you will get a shortage of jobs. Forbidding employers from paying $9 or $12 an hour means that many of their workers won't get $13 or $15 an hour. They will get zero per hour, because those jobs will disappear.
Some businesses will reduce staffing or hours. Some will scrub expansions they had planned. Some will install machines to handle tasks previously assigned to humans. Some will shut down."
"Some of these consequences have already occurred in Seattle. One pizzeria owner, employing 12 people, told NPR her choice was to go back to working 60 to 80 hours a week or close. She's closing.
"Even Seattle's best-known chef, Tom Douglas, says he may have to close some of his 15 restaurants," it reported. If a famous restaurateur can't make it work, how will obscure ones fare?"

If the deputies used tasers and one prong missed, Mulligan said, they might be left in a difficult and potentially dangerous situation.
“They were in a very tight space within a residence,” he said.

Back in March, Mazur says he was called into FMHS Assistant Principal Jeffrey Brown’s office, where he saw that Brown had his website pulled up on a computer there. He said that Brown was angry at him, and told him that posting the pictures online was illegal, and violated copyright. According to Mazur, Brown also worked the angle (contrary to the policy listed above) that the camera belonged to the district. When Mazur argued that the copyright belonged to him, he says that Brown changed his tune and said that it violated student privacy. Brown allegedly told Mazur at the time that a parent had complained.

Mazur alleged that Brown told him in a coercive tone “I’m just asking you to take the website down, I’m not asking you to return any money.” Mazur said he assumed Brown meant the school, with regards to returning money. Mazur said Brown told him that he “wouldn’t report [Mazur] to the IRS” over the money he earned from selling the photos. Brown told Mazur that he was issuing an “administrative directive” to take the photos down. At this point, Mazur said he requested that his parent be brought into the discussion.

Considerable bad blood existed between the two groups, and in the weeks leading up to Mann's death, members of FUC had faced a torrent of verbal abuse and threats on Yik Yak, an anonymous social media site. In May, attorneys for FUC filed a Title IX complaint against UMW with the Education Department's Office for Civil Rights for failing to protect the group from sexual harassment and cyber bullying.

Recently, a Pennsylvania judge prohibited the release of a video depicting Pennsylvania officer Lisa Mearkle fatally shooting an unarmed man in the back. The rationale was that public release of this video would taint the jury pool and impair Mearkle’s right to a fair trial (more here). While any accused individual should indeed be given a fair trial, it is interesting to note there is no similar a concern when it comes to releasing prejudicial information about an injured or dead victim. News articles covering recent police brutality occurrences are quick to point out thevictim was a felon, was a possible gang member, or (god forbid) was drinking alcohol. It is rare for a judge to issue orders prohibiting members of the media from releasing prejudicial or inflammatory information about the victims, out of fear the victim’s civil rights/personal injury/wrongful death lawsuit could be negatively affected.

To say that hemp is one of the most useful plants in existence is not an overstatement. I’m not going to give an A-Z list of all the uses for hemp but I would encourage you to read up on its many uses and take into consideration that hemp is easy to grow, it’s sustainable, and it’s very environmentally friendly.

GM has joined with John Deere in asking the government to confirm that you literally cannot own your car because of the software in its engine.
Like Deere, GM wants to stop the Copyright Office from granting an exemption to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act that would allow you to jailbreak the code in your car’s engine so that you can take it to a non-GM mechanic for service, or fix it yourself. By controlling who can service your car, GM can force you to buy only official, expensive parts, protecting its bottom line.
As Consumerist quips, GM wants you to know that the car in the driveway is “literally not your father’s Oldsmobile.”

Cop Attempts To Break Phone, Illegally Arrests Man Filming

While videotaping an arrest in Wake Forest, NC; Officer S. Woods tried to intimidate me once he noticed I was recording. He began by telling me to remove my hand from my pocket, (it was in there because of the freezing temperature) which I did willingly. After unsuccessfully attempting to question me, (“I don’t answer questions.”) the officer said he needed my phone for evidence, because I had been recording. The officer then slammed me on my face and left shoulder, even though my right hand was already in a cast. Once the cop had me on the ground others piled on as well. Officer Woods then tried to break the phone by slamming it onto the pavement a couple times before making me show him how to stop it from recording. The WF police took me to their department headquarters, where I was held while in pain for hours, due to my shoulder and the awkward position they had me sat in. After hours of crying out in pain while officers routinely came in and tightening my cuffs instead of loosening them, one finally came in and switched the position of the cuffs to relieve my pain. A few minutes after that I was transported to Wake County Jail. I was charged with RDO and released on an unsecured bond, after spending all night in booking. My cell phone (containing the video) was kept as evidence. Later that day, I went to the ER where I was treated for a left shoulder contusion. Two weeks after the arrest, two Wake Forest police officers brought me a dismissal paper as well as my phone, with the video intact.

The “War on Cash” is heating up. Louisiana has outlawed paying cash for second hand goods, under the pretense that criminals sell stolen goods for cash. Most bank analysts are now calling for the end of cash. As I have been warning, in no way are we heading towards a gold standard or anything of the sort. Instead, we are heading into the eye of electronic money for taxes.

The Tesla battery heralds the beginning of the end for fossil fuels - Business Insider

Now the fossil fuel companies – from fuel suppliers such as coal miners to coal-burning electric power utilities – will be on the defensive, fighting the new normal of cheaper renewable supplies and storage.
Instead of asking “can we have our own energy system?” communities will be asking “why can’t we have it?”
The Tesla Energy system launched last week is comprehensive, with global ramifications. The Powerwall system offering 10 kWh is targeted at domestic users. It is complemented by a commercial system termed the Powerpack offering 100 kWh storage, and a stack of 100 such units to form a 10 megawatt hour storage unit that can be used at the scale of small electricity grids.
Whole communities could build micro-grid power supply systems around such a 10 MWh energy storage system, fed by renewable energy generation (wind power or rooftop solar power), at costs that just became super-competitive.
At his launch last week, Musk maintained that the entire electric power grid of the US could be replicated with just 160 million of these utility-scale energy storage units. And two billion of the utility-scale units could provide storage of 20 trillion kWh – electric power for the world.

A Washington Post investigation last year found that local, state and federal agents nationwide have seized $2.5 billion in cash from almost 62,000 people since 2001 – without warrants or indictments. It’s unknown how many got their money back.
It happened, Rivers said, to him on April 15 as he was traveling on Amtrak from Dearborn, Mich., near his hometown of Romulus, Mich., to Los Angeles to fulfill his dream of making a music video. Rivers, in an email, said he had saved his money for years, and his mother and other relatives scraped together the rest of the $16,000.
Rivers said he carried his savings in cash because he has had problems in the past with taking out large sums of money from out-of-state banks.

African American Former Cop Confronts Racist Officers Who Said He ‘Fit the Description’

ichigan police detained a man because he allegedly fit the description of a criminal they were looking for. But the man not only kew his rights – as he had done nothing wrong – he as in fact a former police officer himself.
Knowing he would need to document the encounter, he clicked record on his smart phone camera.
The officers said they were looking for an African American male wearing black shorts. The individual recording the encounter, Mr. Sylvan Triggs was in fact wearing black shorts… But then again, so were – no doubt – many others, as this is a very common piece of attire for someone to wear in the warmer months. This hardly served as probable cause to detain someone.
But to make matters worse for the police who tried to harass him, when Triggs looked up the actual description of the flasher, it turned out he was a tall white male in his 20’s. Triggs was a short black male in his 40′s. This was a clear-cut case of racial harassment.

Clearly, big pharma companies are against the use of CBD oil because, duh, it means people aren't buying their drugs.

Cops: We Need Rights More Than You, Citizen | Popehat

Cynics might say that these policies simply empower police officers to lie effectively — to use time, information, and deliberation to frame a story consistent will all of the available evidence. But maybe that's not right. Maybe the police are genuinely worried about the truth and believe that these techniques: delay, non-coercive circumstances, opportunity to review evidence — promotes the search for the truth and the accurate recollection of facts.
So why don't they extend those same practices when they interview suspects? Why aren't they as concerned about accurate statements from us?
To me, when the police demand these special procedures, it necessarily means one of two things. Either they (1) want to protect their ability to lie, or (2) don't give a shit about whether their regular interrogation tactics used on us are fair or reliable.

New Social Media Challenge: Stomp on the American Flag

New Social Media Challenge: Stomp on the American Flag

A new social media "challenge" is encouraging people across the country to disrespect and stomp on the American flag.
Videos posted to Facebook and Instagram show people taking the "Eric Sheppard Challenge," named after a black college student wanted in Georgia after his gun was allegedly found on campus during a series of anti-flag protests.
Former Navy SEAL Carl Higbie said on "Fox and Friends Weekend" that this represents the "de-evolution of America."
Higbie said that a lack of respect for authority is a growing problem in this generation, calling for legislators to introduce a bill to make it illegal to disrespect the flag.
"This is the problem: we tolerate it. We continue to let people go and they glorify it on social media," Higbie said. "And this is the problem with our society. We have this access to social media where one dumb person can make a massive statement nationwide and start to get other people follow them, which is disgusting."
"Try it in China. Try it in North Korea. See what happens."
